TEENS TURN TO RADIO

Radio continued to appeal to teenagers through 2007, according to annual ratings data by Commercial Radio Australia, released last Friday. Eight out of 10 teenagers and young adults tuning in each week across metropolitan Australia. Commercial radio appeals most to those aged 10 to 17, who reached nearly 82%. Those aged 18-24 and 25-39 also had a 80% penetration. Joan Warner, chief executive officer of peak industry body Commercial Radio Australia, said the ability to listen to radio via PCs, mobile phones and podcasts, was helping to attract a new generation of audiences "The baby boomers grew up with radio and remain very loyal, but it's great to see Gen X and Y, who have so many entertainment options to choose from, are also tuning in to radio."

Overall, commercial radio attracted an average cumulative audience of 8.74 million – or 77% of all people – each week during 2007. This figure was a 79,000 increase over 2006, when 8.66 million people tuned in on average each week. The figures are based on an average of the eight ratings surveys conducted by Nielsen Media Research in the five capital city markets during 2007, compared with the previous year.

Breakfast remained the most hotly contested time slot in radio, Warner said. Commercial radio remained the dominant medium at breakfast, with 6.7 million people listening each week during 2007 compared with 6.6 million last year.

Home was the main place to tune in, accounting for 45% of all commercial radio listening, while 28% of listening took place in the car, 25% at work and 2% elsewhere. Those aged 10-17 and those over 55 spent more than half of the time listening at home, while those aged 18-24 spent 41% of their listening time listening at work.

On average, Australians spent 17 hours and 17 minutes per week listening to commercial radio during 2007, or two hours and 28 minutes per day.

People in Adelaide topped the list for average time spent listening to commercial radio each day (2 hours 37 mins), followed by Melbourne (2 hours, 33 mins), Perth (2 hours, 27 mins), Sydney (2 hours and 23 mins) and Brisbane (2 hours 23 mins).

The festival's artist in residence Jeff Lang, Magic Dirt's Adalita Srsen, Alvin Youngbood and Midnight Oil's Jim Moginie who turned up the fireworks. Kaki King turned "Hey Joe" into a bizarre conversatio while Fourplay gave their version a guitar-free string arrangement. Kaukonen's sidekick Barry Mitterhoff brought in his mandolin, The Audreys worked in a banjo.

They'll try again to break the "Guiness Book of World records" for the largest guitar band in the world. AFI AWARDS DRAW IN RATINGS

The L'Oréal Paris 2007 AFI Awards, held in Melbourne before 1,000 guests, pealed at 841,000 viewers during the Red Carpet Arrivals coverage, which was presented by Richard Wilkins, Livinia Nixon and Sophie Monk. This was "a marked increase from last year", said the organizers. Awards Executive Producer Paul Dainty said: "Anyone who watched the L'Oréal Paris 2007 AFI Awards would have no doubt that it is a first class event with tremendous appeal across a broad demographic. We started this journey in 2005 and always said it will be a steady rebuilding of the AFI brand over 5 years. There is no question we are making major progress in both consolidating the passionate core audience while also introducing Australian content to a brand new audience. To pull over 800,000 viewers on a Thursday night in December is fantastic when you consider the ARIAs got just over 1 million viewers on a Sunday night in October. Planning is already underway for next year's 50th AFI Awards, and we hope very much that Nine will help us continue to rebuild the AFI brand by putting us in a prime time spot in November."

Melanie's song "Life on the Land" relates her family's struggle with drought on their third generation grain and sheep farm near Inverell. The ACMF founder Don Spencer OAM, "The judges were deeply moved by both the words and the singing of this ballad and Melanie is a deserving winner."

Spencer adds that the winner of the instrumental category, Overture for Australian Youth written by 17-year-old Sydney student Joel Vouzakism, "is just a phenomenal piece of work. It could go straight to a symphony orchestra it's so good."

This year's comp — now in its fourth year — drew 1000 entrants from primary, secondary and specific purposes schools across Australia. For the first time some of the winning songwriters will perform their compositions at the Sydney Festival First Night in January.
