Australian hip-hop artist Ziggy Ramo has stretched his powerful advocacy for change from music into his debut book, Human? A Lie That Has Been Killing Us Since 1788.

In 2021, the Wik and Soloman Island rapper announced the upcoming release of his album and accompanying debut non-fiction book, Human, which he described as “part memoir, part history and part cultural reckoning,” per NME.

He added, “Whether you learn from reading or listening, I want everyone to be able to fully engage with Human. It is not a book of answers. It is not a 10-step plan on how to fix this country. I am not speaking on behalf of anyone. I am simply sharing my lived experience.”

The book has been published by Pantera Press and officially released on Tuesday, 30 April.

To celebrate the book’s release, Ramo was photographed at the Booktopia offices and wrote in an accompanying caption on Instagram, “My debut book is out now. After writing a manuscript I don’t have a lot left to say as far as captions go.”

Ramo expressed “a massive thank you” to the team “who helped bring this monstrosity of a project together” and added: “Human? is a book, album and visual art collection. I am so extremely passionate about this work and it feels entirely surreal to let it out into the world. I hope it reaches you”.

The blurb of Human? pulls no punches, with the synopsis beginning: “So-called Australia is built upon a lie: that 97% of the population are human, and the others simply ‘Indigenous’, devoid of the same basic rights.”

Human? was written when Ramo was on the cusp of becoming a parent and became his “offering for the future”, which is “an attempt to bridge a nation-wide knowledge gap, and start a new conversation. Prerequisite reading for anyone searching for a way forward, together.”

You can order the book (in paperback or eBook options) on the Booktopia website.

Earlier this year, Ramo released his latest single, the moving Banamba. Check out the music video below.
